DDoS attack, EasyNet Holland
By Netnibble Support | July 3, 2008
One of our European servers, SATURN, is currently unreachable or responding very slowly due to a DDoS attack aimed at EasyNet. The data-center techs are doing everything possible to mitigate the attack and re-route traffic. At one point they were managing to return traffic to near-normal levels. However, the attack then changed so additional measures are now being taken to return service. We will update this entry once we have further information.
Update [21:15GMT]
The bulk of the DDoS traffic has now stopped or been re-routed. However, we are still experiencing some instability in network routing and will continue to monitor and intervene as necessary.

VPS discount code for our blog visitors
By Dave-C - CEO | March 25, 2008
Netnibble is pleased to announce the launch of our new generation of Virtual Private Servers (VPSs) and, exclusive to our blog visitors for the moment, we’re giving 10% off for life on these super-powerful units using discount code BLOGOFF10.
Hosted in the FortressITX data-center in New Jersey, USA, these VPSs are powered by 8 CPU 64-bit servers, crammed full of memory, via our Premium network connectivity. Managed via the Parallels Power Panel (the new name for Virtuozzo) they come with a choice of control panel options including cPanel/WHM, Plesk or DirectAdmin for Linux VPSs and Plesk for Windows VPSs, and each have a minimum of 3 dedicated IP addresses. We’ve also added in a further 2Gb of FREE DISK SPACE to each VPS to accomodate your operating system etc!
Ordering any of these VPSs with a control panel option also includes (at no extra charge) our premium fully-managed VPS option.
This new, 21st-century, breed of VPS employs SLM guaranteed memory rather than the older UBC (basic plus burst) format, to ensure that you always have maximum resources available to your applications and web sites.
These VPSs are so new that they’re not yet available on our web sites, so to order them you’ll need to go directly to our client area to browse the configurations available and place your order.
- Click here for Linux 64-bit SLM premium VPSs (remember to use coupon code BLOGOFF10 at checkout)
- Click here for Windows 64-bit SLM premium VPSs (remember to use coupon code BLOGOFF10 at checkout)
This offer will remain valid until current nodes are filled, and may not be used in conjunction with any other offer or coupon code. 10% off for life remains valid providing your account remains in good standing, and will continue if you decide to upgrade to a higher specification in the future.
If you require any further information before ordering, please email pre-sales@netnibble.net and we’ll be happy to help!

What is SLM memory?
By Tony Walker - Support Manager | March 25, 2008
We’ve been asked this question a couple of times recently, so I’ll add this reply to our Knowledgebase shortly but, for those reading this blog (and knowing that Dave is currently working up a special offer for visitors here), here’s a quick exlanation of what SLM memory is:
SLM is the method of memory management we use within Parallels (previously Virtuozzo) for controlling all aspects of the resources allocated to a VPS. The previous generation of this sort of memory management with Virtuozzo was called UBC or more commonly known as the /proc/user_beancounters file. With the older UBC, there are multiple variables when it comes to setting up memory, thus allowing a host to give you burst memory and the capability to limit certain other variables (such as your kernel memory).
SLM removes all of that, and instead just replaces those 20 or so memory variables with a single value, giving you the most guaranteed level of memory available today with Parallels/Virtuozzo. Most providers today still use the old UBC method of memory management, and have not yet stepped up to the capabilities of SLM.
All of our new 64-bit packages use SLM-guaranteed memory, which means that you are never having to rely on a share of whatever burst memory might be available on the node. Burst memory should never be relied upon, so instead we are providing you with a guaranteed environment for your VPS.

Upgrades, more upgrades, and yet more upgrades!
By Dave-C - CEO | March 24, 2008
If you’re a regular visitor to The Netnibble Blog, you’ll already have noticed that the site design has changed. This is part of the roll-out of our new Version 3 Netnibble site format - We hope that you like the changes!
The aim is to make all Netnibble web sites worldwide have an identical look and feel about them, to make navigation through them easier, and to make them easier for us to update them across the board with new features and services we’re introducing. We’ll be upgrading our main and national sites over the next few days. To perform each upgrade we’ll be taking each site down in turn for a couple of hours - We’ll try to do everything during off-peak hours, but apologies in advance if you can’t access one of our sites because you happen to visit it in mid-upgrade.
Those with a keen eye will also notice that we have a new Netnibble site in Asia (currently in production), brought about by the introduction of the new .ASIA domain launch and our need to better serve our customers and visitors from that part of the world.
Our Support, Billing and Customer Services have all now been centralised into one new site, which also includes a Knowledgebase (we’re working on it!), download area, access to your customer accounts, and to all our products and services.
Also new to our Netnibble family is The Netnibble NIC - Our centralised domain registry site, giving you access to the various registry portals we use, along with the customer sites where you can update your name-server information, registrant details, etc. You can also apply to become one of our domain name resellers too!
All these changes and upgrades are the first phase of roll-out plans for 2008, and we’ll be adding some exciting new products to the Netnibble range during the course of this year.
As always, our Support and Sales teams are at your disposal - Please feel free to drop us a line through the Ticket System if you have any questions or suggestions.

Datacenter Maintenance - New Jersey, USA
By Netnibble Support | February 7, 2008
Starting tomorrow, and over the weekend, some maintenance work is being conducted at the New Jersey West Data Center (Fortress ITX). This will impact our CRESSIDA server only.
The necessary work involves upgrading equipment and routers while implementing major adjustments on distribution switches, core/edge routers and Layer2 connectivity.
Three maintenance windows have been nominated for this work, during which connectivity to Cressida may be interrupted for period of up to 45 minutes per maintenance window.
The maintenance windows have been scheduled for:
Slot 1: 12AM-2AM Feb 8th 2008 - Feb 9th 2008 (Friday Night into Saturday morning)
Slot 2: 11PM-3AM Feb 9th 2008 - Feb 10th 2008 (Saturday night into Sunday morning)
Slot 3: 12AM-2AM Feb 10th 2008 - (Monday morning)
Also over this weekend, we are bringing two additional servers on-line at this datacenter, one to add further shared-hosting capacity to our pool, and the other to provide additional bulk-mail and ETRN fail-over into our bulk mail transit network.
All work has been scheduled to cause minimum disruption to services and we thank you, in advance, for your patience and understanding during this period.
